Especially worried about his balance after my grandmother died, I sent my grandfather the Alert1 device on April 6. He told me just after receiving it that it would not work for him.

I wrote that week to explain this to Alert1 on April 18 (attached). They never responded. Finally, on August 1, months into being charged (repeatedly!!) for this device that has never once been used, in addition to my initial expense buying the thing, I spoke with a person who gave me a way to return it and said I could send her the past correspondence. When I did (attached), on August 1, just after hanging up, it bounced back (attached), even though I'd been told to get in touch with this email.

Regardless, we returned the device, explaining that it had never ever been used, that we'd tried since the first week to return it. But still, I was not only NOT refunded for the purchase or for the months it was not used and no one would tell us where to return it, but I was charged ONE MORE TIME for being this far into a new billing cycle...for the device that was never used!

I have reported them to my bank, who've refunded me for that month's purchase, and will now do so to the Better Business Bureau, and if that does not resolve this without affecting my credit, I'll take my skills as a full-time writer, and reach out to the press. This is absurd.

Furious with this company

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
They were charging my elderly parent for 11 months $25 a month for an unreturned unit that wasn't working. They said they notified her ONCE by mail in February that the unit needed to be returned. A company whose clients are most likely elderly should reach out by phone more than once, come on! When I called to get a shipping label and possible compensation I was met with RUDE customer service. There is NOTHING on the website regarding fees of this kind. Also the monitoring is poor. I am NEVER recommending this company. I am finding my mother a company with better customer service. They should care about their clients. I am furious. Not to mention charging an 85 year old fines. Unacceptable. And SAD.

We are very sorry you were upset. We do not charge our members fees for equipment unless the equipment we've loaned to them is unreturned, lost, or damaged.

In this case, as you mentioned in your review, the equipment was unfortunately unreturned. Virtually all of our members are seniors and are extremely happy with both our service and our pricing.

Some of our competitors charge up to 3 times our prices for similar or lesser services. Thank you.

These people are crroks

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Updated by user May 21, 2019

These crooks continue to press me for funds. They have added a $20 non- payment fee to my account and are now making treating calls to my house in an attempt to bully me into paying them not the $60 they originally wanted but no $80.

They called again today at about 4:30pm EST, telling me that they will be making collections calls everyday and that their claim is "valid" in their opinion.

I have offered to meet them 1/2 way to make them go away and they refused the offer. Why would anyone want to deal with these people?

Original review May 03, 2019
The equipment provided never worked properly. This week, it started to alarm at 6PM and disputed repeated calls to the tech support line, they said they hand no idea how to fix it, it alarmed every 2 hours from 6PM until 6AM the next morning. It kept my mother, who the device is for, and everyone else in the house up all night. I called the main office and after getting no satisfaction about the "tech support", I canceled the service. I made the mistake of paying for it for a full year and they refused to provide any sort of refund for the $400 they received. Today, I see that they have charged my credit card $60. When I called they said that I was being charged for "missing equipment". They charge too much, their equipment is faulty, their tech support is substandard, and the cherry on top, is that they provide no refunds and then charge you again for bogus missing equipment.

Buyer Beware!!!

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
Updated by user May 19, 2019

Well over a month since I filed a dispute with my credit card company and the Better Business Bureau, Alert 1 has become far worse. Here's what's happened: 1) new charges appeared on my credit card statement, one for $34.80 and a second one for $59.95.

I ended service months earlier and returned the equipment. Alert 1 provied no explanation for these new charges and I was forced to add another two disputes to my credit card; 2) the Chase credit card customer service representative told me that Alert 1 has never responded to their inquiry about the dispute, which is highly unusual for a company that is not scamming customers; and 3) Alert 1 continues to claim they sent me terms and conditions back in 2014. When asked to provide the date and what was sent, Alert 1 simply said they sent me everything. No terms and conditions were ever received.

I highly recommend that no consumer do business with Alert 1. Even when service is cancelled, they still bill.

Original review Apr 19, 2019
Alert 1 - Beware, Alert 1 lies about their refund policies. I was told in 2014 that when Alert 1 was no longer needed, I'd receive a prorated refund for full months not used. When I requested a one month refund for the month not being used (I paid quarterly), Alert 1 refused. When I disputed the amount through my credit card, Alert 1 threatened to send my account to a collection agency. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY!!!!

Bad service, no refunds

Alert 1 - Bad service, no refunds

This has NEVER worked properly... The alarm went off more than once when she was not even home and several times when she was home and myself, sister and paramedics were called and sent to her home and SHE was never called - she was both disturbed and embarrassed.

A few months ago she called to cancel the service but failed to pack up the equipment because she was not physically able to get behind the furniture and disconnect until I had a chance to get to her home. They automatically charged her credit card without ANY warning and told me they sent an email -- my 91-year-old mother DOES NOT have email!!!!

And they will not prorate the couple of months she had delayed mailing back equipment and had the nerve to tell me to donate the remaining time to someone else. THIS DID NOT WORK PROPERLY FOR MY MOTHER WHY WOULD I PUT SOMEONE ELSE IN THIS POSITION???

This company makes it VERY difficult for an elderly and is not willing to be helpful in ANY way, ironic for a company that sells a product for elderly people.

They charged him for another YEAR in advance. I told them that I didnt want to renew and would send their stuff back to them.

I did sent all of their equipment back, yet still received a bill yesterday for the full amount of 650.00.

They are bullies and scammers, they prey on the old people, very rude and unwilling to make their consumers happy when they want to cancel their account with them. VERY DISHONEST COMPANY!!!!!!!!

Original review Jun 20, 2018
I signed my Gramps up at 91 for the gps and fall service that he wore around his neck. He quit using it a couple of months back and when the contract of a year was up we were sending it back. I out of the blue got a charge on my card of 686.00 for another year, i promptly called them and got a HUGE RUN AROUND about how i agreed to continuous yearly billing (which i did not) told them to let me here that part on their recorded agreement, they couldnt. lied about what i agreed to and then threatened with collections. I asked them how they can treat the elderly like this, i was the one who was not treating him correctly by not agreeing to let my card be charged again and i will cause my grampa ruined credit if i didnt agree and pay then. Told him in not so nice terms on where to go and good luck with that and if they want their equipment back they will have to send a shipping tag as i am not paying for that either. He insinuated that we are trash that dont pay their bills........NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY

HARRASSMENT TO PAY FOR SERVICE THAT WAS CANCELLED

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I subscribed to Alert 1 service in 2017. I cancelled service at the end of the year obligation, as they require full payment a year in advance. They then began sending me ambiguous e-mails. The first stated that I owed payment immediately (for renewal), but did not mention any amount due. When I responded, they indicated that my payment was actually due in 30 days, but I don't remember the exact amount. I explained to them that I did not want to renew service (the yearly fee, as I recall was somewhere around $430), and would return the equipment. They indicated that equipment return should have been done sooner than when I responded to their e-mails. Nevertheless, I returned their equipment via UPS, and the tracking information indicated that the package was delivered to their location February 26th, and signed for by "Peggy" at the "RECEPTION DESK". Today, April 20th, I received correspondence (undated) from Alert 1 stating that I owe them a past due amount of $1,003.35!! No explanation was given documenting what this charge entailed. Alert 1 is a totally incompetent and unscrupulous business. I will be contacting them during business hours Monday, April 23rd and express my complete disgust and consternation regarding the manner in which they deal with those who desire to cancel their "service".

My mom passed away on April 9th and i called the company to return the equipment and received an email that the equipment need to be sent be 4/16 in order to get a refund on the annual fee. I sent it out the 12th and it was received by the 17th. I called to verify the receipt and was told that it had to be RECEIVED by the 16th and wanted to charge me the full year. I have the email proving i was right and disputed the charge with my credit card company, who agreed, and refunded me the money. The now are trying to charge me for an extended warranty that we never ordered. These folks are crooks

Not Good

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I purchased the Alert-1 MOBILE unit. It is the one that is cellular and does not need a base unit. When I press the button, they do respond promptly but YOU CANNOT HEAR them speak. I called tech support and they said that is a loud as it gets. An elderly person will not be able to hear the operator. Then after my mom passed, I returned the unit and cord and they claimed that they did not receive the cord back so they charged us $59.95. Great salespeople when you sign up, but poor product and poor customer support.

Fraud Fraud Fraud

Charge a credit card without my knowledge after the account was closed. They will do whatever they need to get the money from whomever.

Never called or notified me that there was a charge. I will be reporting them to the better business bureau in Pennsylvania. This is the second time that this has happened. They do not apologize and act like this is within the scope of the agreement.

When you call they are defensive and take no responsibility. This company must ripoff unknowing people on a regular basis.

Hidden Multi-Year Billing

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
When I signed up for Alert 1 it is stated "Billed Annually". Since the website stated elsewhere, "No Contracts", I took this to mean, billed for future service if that was desired. It wasn't. I also read an impenetrable paragraph of legalese, and though a professor, could not make it out. It seemed to stop future service one had to write that intention to Alert 1 at some point, though there is no notification of when that point comes up that is ever sent to you. In short, this is the only company I've ever dealt with where the consumer has to prove or alert the company that no more than the year paid for and year of service received is wanted. Luckily, my card company issued a new number so Alert 1 could not just take the coming year's payment from it. This is all Fraud. And their "punishment" for me? Daily phone calls, sometimes 6 a week, for "not paying for next year's service". These have gone on for 2 to 3 months. When I told them to stop, a rep said "No, we are going to keep calling." This is Harassment and it's federal since Alert 1 uses the Internet. They will stop these phone calls. I know that.

Alert 1 is a lying shyster company

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
While searching the internet for a fall detection system I came across Alert 1. They asked for a name and phone number. Within minutes I was contacted by a lying sales rep. The plan sounded good and he insisted the 1 year plan would be the best price. My objection was what if I have to put mom in a home in a few months? He insisted if that was the case I would receive a pro rated refund upon returning the equipment. Well, 4 months later I had to move mom to an area with no service so I called to cancel and return the equipment. The customer service rep told me that I would have to return the equipment, insured for $600, at my expense. Then she informed me that I would not receive a refund for the unused 8 months. I explained to her that's not what I was told when I was sold the service. After several minutes going round and round with her I told her I was filing a complaint with the FTC about this, and disputing the charge on my credit card, which I have done. So far the FTC have not contacted me, but the credit card company sided with the shysters. The best advice I can offer is STAY AWAY FROM THESE ORGANIZED THIEVES! Alert 1 is nothing but a bunch of liars that will tell you anything you want to hear to make a sale!!!

Sorry about you Mom and it really irritates me when companies take advantage of situations like yours.

You can't do business on the telephone when there is a written contract.

Your entire deal is stipulated within the four corners of that document.

If it isn't in writing, don't believe it. No matter what anyone "says".
